There are many people who assume that an eco-ethical lifestyle is expensive and impractical. But the reality is totally different from this misconception. A Bangalore couple is making eco-friendly lifestyles affordable, available and of course trendy too.
When Akshata Bhadranna and her husband Rahul Pagad came back to India after their stint at Indonesia, the duo was shocked to see their beloved Bangalore. The environmental deterioration of the Bengaluru city pushed the couple to do something for their city. They founded Dopolgy; As an affordable green alternative for everyday stationery which extended to become a resource for many others. The underlying idea of the start-up is to reuse every resource for as long as possible and in the process actually protect the pristine resources from depletion.
From The Horse’s Mouth
“To fight climate change, it is not just enough to avoid certain materials but very important to use resources wisely and recycle or upcycle it to increase the lifespan of that material before consider it a waste.”
The quest for ecological alternatives began with the discovery of newspaper pencils. A green alternative for the wooden pencils and eventual deforestation. Repurposed materials slowly became the core of their catalog, with an underlying thought to recycle materials more than once and safeguard virgin resources and live to create a circular economy. Biodegradable pencils were soon followed by the repurposed paper to save the forests.
“Seedpaper, another miracle product which is made from
waste paper and cotton, where sheets have seeds in them.
Seedpaper is used to create tags, business cards, event tags, etc.”
No pain no gain
Dopolgy founders themselves embraced an eco-ethical lifestyle before asking others to go green. They manufactured goods that don’t produce waste and the brand is totally plastic-free. They reuse leftover papers and the cuttings for manufacturing Seedbombs or to make Dopolgy display materials for the events.
After manufacturing pencils from magazines, textbooks, storybooks, etc. they unveiled Seedpaper, another miracle product which is made from waste paper and cotton, where sheets have seeds in them. Seedpaper is used to create tags, business cards, event tags, etc. including bespoke services like seedpaper wedding invites.
The Speed breakers on the ride
Social entrepreneurship has its own challenges. Running a profitable social enterprise like Dopolgy becomes a lot difficult as the public takes it as a not for profit effort. Apart from that what else annoys the founders is right here:
Sourcing plastic-free raw materials
Shipping the finished products plastic-free.
Convincing people to choose sustainable alternatives.
“Newspaper pencils is an innovation from Dopolgy.
It’s an alternative for the wooden pencils
and eventual deforestation.”
The Snowball effect of Dopolgy
More and more people are becoming associated with Dopolgy for afforestation projects, environmental awareness programs and the brand always lends a hand to the environmentalists and activists to pave paths for a sustainable future. Not just that, people also come to Dopolgy to talk about the environment, get clarifications on options and rant out frustrations on how they couldn’t convince the people around them. The owners encourage people around them to have healthy discussions.
Conversations and discussions bring about various everyday things that demand a total revamping. More and more things come into notice and it challenges their creative juices to flow out.
And there’s a lot more on the cards
The founders envision Dopolgy evolving into a movement, where people would let their conscience take over. And this demands very little changes like opting for a green lifestyle, kitchen composting, growing plastic-free.
Dopolgy founders raise public awareness campaigns to let people know about the eco-ethical alternatives and that an eco-friendly lifestyle is neither tedious nor an expensive process.
The duo constantly associates with brands to plant trees. They celebrated their first anniversary by planting 100 trees in the name of their customers and supporters (Friends, family, eco-business, vendors). They motivate everyone to plant trees and to choose eco-ethical gifts over mundane material things. Till now they have influenced people to plant over 160 trees and there’s more to come.
