Go Organic, The Nature’s Way
By Lifestyle Food
All of us think of growing our own organic greens at least once in our lifetime! Is it really that simple? Dr. Harinath, the inventor of “Moringa Bullet”, is here with us to give us a push in the right direction to grow our own organic veggies. Read along to go organic.
How about leaving a high paying job for farming? Sounds scary, isn’t it? Let alone actually putting it into action! But, there’s one such man who not just left his lucrative career in the US, but he returned to his home in India to pursue his dream, organic farming. From a DRDO scientist to a drug researcher in the US, to organic farming, Dr. Harinath Kasiganesan’s journey is a story to tell for the generations to come.
Detoxing Our Produce
“It’s important to eat clean for which the food needs to be free of chemical residues,” says Dr. Harinath during one of our conversations! Sadly, in the present-times, plants are grown with an alarming amount of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other artificial additives for bulk production that pollute the soil and the water bodies.
The basic difference in the yields he says is in the taste. The aroma and the taste that you get from these yields is due to the presence of lots of micronutrients, minerals, and phytochemicals present in them. These crops are tolerant to extreme climatic conditions and have unique medicinal properties.
The aboriginal crops are grown using bio-fertilizers made of cow dung, cow urine, cow milk, curd and native herbs that make the food rich in macro, and micronutrients and medicinal benefits. He believes that the true fortune of a nation lies in its Quality Domestic Product (QDP) and not in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“Organic farming is a type of farming which is inexpensive,
sustainable, a type of farming which can only help us in the future.”
Gear Up To Grow Your Greens!
It is indeed possible to grow your own organic gardens in a short span of time. All you need are a few essential items and get going with your green revolution.
- Collect your kitchen food waste and vegetable waste, and make a paste of it using a grinder.
- Mix an equal portion (1:1 ratio) of garden soil picked up from your backyard into the paste and not the heat-treated ones from the shop.
- Mix it properly (at 50% moisture), fill in small containers with this mixture, and let it stay in shade for a week.
- The soil microbes will feed on the decaying organic house waste for a week and then turn them into nutrient-filled organic soil.
- In fact, you can make organic compost prepared from fresh cow dung, urine, green mass, and dry mass.
- He suggests making organic pesticide with a paste of ginger, garlic, green chilli and neem leaves that are soaked in cow urine for a week.
- Then spray in 1/10 the concentration on the plants at the sunset to get rid of pests.
“When plants are grown in an organic environment,
they acquire over 100 nutritional elements from the soil,
in a synchronized exchange with the soil microbes.”
The Moringa Magic
Make a paste of Moringa leaf in buttermilk and spray it on the plants in the evening. This infuses all the essential nutrients to the plants, straight through the foliar root.
“We must also understand that organic farming
is a science; it is a form of art, and it is culture”
An Ode To Mother Nature
There is a beautiful symbiosis of nature and human that has persisted over thousands of years of evolution. The more we delve into nature beyond the confines of rationalistic science, the more we find all aspects of life from individual cells to complex organisms and their ecosystem are continually sensing and responding to each other. Also, the soil microbes assist in the immune defense system of the plants, negating the need for synthetic pesticides. Upon consuming these plants, we humans are benefited with wholesome nutrition. Secondly, it also activates the detoxification system in our body that drains all those harmful chemicals we have ingested so far. So, let us join hands in the organic green revolution to make Earth a better place and in turn our health!
