Tyres are a major global waste problem. Collectively 1.5 billion of tyres are discarded every year. Disposal of waste tyres is a challenging task because tyres have a long life and are non-biodegradable. These tyres if not recycled or reused turn to landfill and get converted into toxic wastelands. As the tyres degrade in the environment, they release toxins that contaminate the land and water.
OTH-Paris gives the discarded tyres a second life to be used in the footwear industry. Tyre tread is a precious material with very high wear-resistant properties and footwear benefits a lot from the inclusion of this material in shoe soles to give you grip on and off the street.
Oth-Paris was started 4 years ago with the idea of using the recycled tyres as soles. Arnaud Barboteau drew his inspiration from sandals being made from old tyre and ropes for children in Africa. It took him 2 years to develop the sole with recycled tyres since no industrial method existed at that time and in turn trying to minimize the environmental impact made by the fashion industry.
Arnaud Barboteau is working right now on “bio leather” made from natural fibers.
- 26% of tyres are ground into filler for asphalt and insulation.
- 7% of tyres are blended into roadbeds, barriers, retaining walls, and other civil- engineering uses.
- 7% of tyres are recycled into things like playground surfaces and tyre swings.
- 49% of tyres are burned for fuel. tyre rubber has more energy (Btu) than coal but, like any solid fuel, tyres burn dirty, requiring energy to clean the particulates.
The footwear is created especially for the European market and every part of the shoe comes from Europe! From manufacturing to shipping- every detail is taken into account and made as green as possible. The company does not own any Vans or trucks instead they make use of empty spaces in buses for shipment. This helps to reduce up to 90% of their carbon footprint.
People must know that when they buy a t-shirt worth 2$, behind the scene labor conditions can be really bad and environmental conditions are bad as well. When people want to have an impact, it has a price. It is ethical to buy a sustainable product that is a little bit more expensive but that you can keep longer.
The story does not end here! Each product bears the name and GPS coordinates of a special location in the world. It is a call for all the people out there to put on their shoes and set on an adventure. What more! Here we are wishing you an adventurous trip to enrich your souls with these immortal soles!
