Did you know that storytelling is the best way to instill values and inspire people? Well, we will tell you a story today, your story! Before we begin, do you know Superman? Yes, the same one, the one who goes by the name Clark Kent and works as a reporter during the day and then lives his passion intermittently. Do you sometimes feel like that? I am sure you do. How would your life be if you could live your passion every single moment of your life- at work, at home, at play- everywhere and be inspired all the time? Well, this is where we are going to bring in Dirk Coetsee for you to help you live a life that is purposeful and meaningful to you.
Researchers have found that an average job holder spends 13 years and 2 months at work if you are working 9 hours a day. Phew! That’s a big chunk of an average human lifespan. Many a time we have asked to keep our professional and personal lives separate. Is it even possible when we are spending this much time earning our living? No, it is not. We are not born just to pay the bills and die one day without realizing our passion or fulfilling our interests in life. So why fear when Dirk is here! We will give you a step by step approach to find your inspiration and blend it into your professional life and thus making you feel like a Superman or a Wonderwoman that you already are!
Every Moment Counts
The first question Dirk asks everyone in his coaching sessions is “What is the reason for you even drawing breath?” Are you baffled like we are?! Dirk says, “That is a question that bounces off the walls during every training or coaching session that I do, yet very few can answer this with practical conviction.” Society has schooled us that happiness is getting that “right job” getting the “right money” and getting that “right partner” to start a family and this is happiness. You have landed the job and have everything in place but happiness still evades you because your passion is not a part of your career. You have kept it separate or for a later on date when you retire. But fulfillment and happiness don’t work like this. Well, answer the question before we move on!!
Find your spark
A key element of inspiration is to not only find meaning (Purpose) in your work but to first find the meaning (purpose) of your own life. It is very hard if not impossible to align yourself to a company purpose if you do not know your own. Do you often say “What is in it for me?”. Surprise surprise! People who say “what can I do for the others” in general are:
- MORE ENERGETIC
- MORE SUCCESSFUL
- MORE PASSIONATE
- MORE IMPACTFUL
- MORE INFLUENTIAL
- MORE EXPRESSIVE
- MORE COMMITTED
The question, “What can I do for the others” inadvertently takes you on this inward journey of finding your purpose and should not be dictated by anyone else. When dictated by society, politicians, or parents it is not yours, right?
Key elements of successfully introducing purpose to your life and work are that you joyfully create it and joyfully share it with as many as possible. As it is your creation, to begin with, a strong sense of ownership and responsibility flows from it.
A steve-Kotler-inspired framework to introduce purpose to your life
1. List up to twenty-five curiosities or interests
This is your interest and could be anything that you are interested in. General examples would be:
- Cultural behavior of ancient dynasties such as the Genghis Khan era
- How the brain works in social interactions
- Tennis coaching
- Body language in sales
- Travel to all South-East Asian countries
These are highly specific examples and it will serve you well to be very specific and not broad when writing down your interests.
2. Find the intersection points
Bundle your interests into as little possible elements. For example, one of my interests listed was travel and another writing, when ‘bundling’ them together the intersection point becomes ‘travel writing’.
3.Prioritize top three intersection points
After listing the intersection points contemplate which would you prioritize as things that you would love the most. List the top three. An example might be:
Travel Photography, Influencing during the sales process, High-performance coach to tennis players.
4.Tread the boards
Now build passion by playing around with those top three priorities. Do the research. Ask for mentorship. Attend courses. Listen to audiobooks. Practise. Play. All of this will build Passion. But passion without purpose is selfish, to say the least. The purpose is higher than the self and serves as many others as possible. Now, we have to answer the question of how to translate passion to Purpose?
5. Translate passion into purpose
How can my passion serve as many people as possible? This, let us hear from the horse’s mouth “My Purpose is to get companies and people ‘unstuck’. The reason for this is that most companies and people are stuck in their normal and old ways of doing things and frustrated with their results. How can I get as many people ‘unstuck’ as possible and serve others? The answer is simple: By not only coaching and training but also writing, public speaking, and my company has a very strong online presence I am reaching more and more and helping more and more.”
The purpose of this article is to help you find yours. When we teach children purpose over politics and societal pressures, they will be happier. When you find meaning in your life and career you will influence others to be happier and find more meaning in their lives. You will love what you do and be more impactful in a very positive way. These are gloomy days ahead. When life throws lemons at us, let us make lemonade. Let us make use of these homebound days to find our passion and purpose in our lives and make it fulfilling. Godspeed! Make the most of the time NOW and live your life NOW!
Most importantly, make life about always being true to who you are and not who or what family, friends, teachers, and society tell you that you should be. Only then will you find your passion. The more aligned your thoughts and beliefs are to your purpose and passions, the easier it becomes to make decisions, set and achieve goals, and keep “work sickness” from infecting your life.
